Traumatic Bilateral Pneumothoraces due to Sternal Wire Migration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sternal wound complications after cardiac surgery are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Wire migrations associated with sternal dehiscence can lead to catastrophic haemorrhage unless intervened in time. We present a case of sternal wire migration causing bilateral pneumothoraces.

Bilateral tension pneumothoraces leading to cardiac arrest after coronary artery bypass surgery.
Bilateral pneumothoraces are a very rare event. In clinical settings, inadvertent incursion into the pleural space resulting from diagnostic or therapeutic medical interventions such as bilateral venipunctures or damage to the lung parenchyma due to high pressure ventilation may be causative. Bilateral pneumothoraces postcardiac surgery are rarely reported. We present the case of bilateral tens...
متن کاملBilateral sequential lung transplantation without sternal division.
OBJECTIVES The 'clamshell incision' is considered the standard approach for bilateral sequential lung transplantation (BSLT); however, a considerable morbidity may be related to this incision. The bilateral anterolateral thoracotomy without sternal division is an alternative approach that may contribute to avoid chest wall complications. METHODS We have employed this approach in a prospective...
متن کاملA new technical approach for sternal closure with suture anchors (Dogan technique).
OBJECTIVES Various methods for sternal approximation have been described previously. Some patients undergoing these procedures are at risk for sternal dehiscence and mediastinitis. We used a different method, with a suture anchor system, for median sternotomy closure as an alternate technique in patients with a high risk of postoperative sternal dehiscence and sternal nonunion. MATERIAL AND M...
متن کاملBilateral pneumothoraces complicating reduction mammoplasty: a case report
BACKGROUND Bilateral pneumothoraces after cosmetic breast surgery are rare and sporadically reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION A 65-year-old female patient developed bilateral pneumothoraces after bilateral breast reduction surgery. Emergent chest tube thoracostomy was performed on both sides. The chest drains were removed on the fourth day (left side) and sixth day (right side), a...
متن کاملA prospective randomized study of sternal closure: comparison of Mersilene tape versus standard wire closure.
BACKGROUND To compare in a prospective randomized study Mersilene tape and standard metal wire for complications and pain upon sternal wound closure. METHODS Sixty-four patients scheduled for cardiac surgery were prospectively randomized to undergo sternal closure using either Mersilene tape (n=30) or standard metal wire (n=34). The intensity of postoperative pain from the chest wound was ass...
